Two weeks before I was set to head off for the 2008 OCR I was out riding my bicycle through the mountains when I was hit head on by a woman driving a four wheel drive. I was heading straight for her for about 60 metres with her completly on the wrong side of the road and an embankment on my left so had no where to go but hit her. I was doing 55kph and she was probaly doing 75kph. I dare say she was doing something else in the car other than driving????
This was from collecting her rear vision mirror. Ambo ride to hospital sucking on the green stick and having had two hits of morphine.
Incredibly I broke no bones but just had a lot of deep bruising and cuts and abrasions. By the way she has since been charged and I have got a very nice cheque from her insurance company for a new bike. I have also since found out that I need a total knee reconstruction.
At last after lots of planning for the OCR trip we were off. Chappy on the right and Marcus set off for Ballarat at 8 pm to meet up with 4 other riders. Possibly not a good idea for me to be going but had put in too much planning and had been dreaming of the day. So......
Overnight stop at Packsaddle was a bit crazy. Howling winds really tested our tents. Great Mixed Grill which was washed down by some nice cold Tooheys Olds.
My only off for the trip happened just South of Milparinka. Came over a slight rise doing about 100 kph and hit a 50 metre stretch of loose stuff. Sent me tank slapping and after about 40 metres down I went. Pis weak BMW crash bar folds back onto the cylinder head and puts a crack in it. Never mind Chief Engineer (RAN retired) Dick came to the rescue fixing it with some Liquid Metal which held for the rest of the trip.
The rest of the guys patiently waited.
On the road out from Tibooburra to Camerons Corner crossing a clay pan.
The wild dog gate at Camerons Corner.
