Two weeks before I was set to head off for the 2008 OCR I was out riding my bicycle through the mountains when I was hit head on by a woman driving a four wheel drive. I was heading straight for her for about 60 metres with her completly on the wrong side of the road and an embankment on my left so had no where to go but hit her. I was doing 55kph and she was probaly doing 75kph. I dare say she was doing something else in the car other than driving????
This was from collecting her rear vision mirror. Ambo ride to hospital sucking on the green stick and having had two hits of morphine.
Incredibly I broke no bones but just had a lot of deep bruising and cuts and abrasions. By the way she has since been charged and I have got a very nice cheque from her insurance company for a new bike. I have also since found out that I need a total knee reconstruction.
At last after lots of planning for the OCR trip we were off. Chappy on the right and Marcus set off for Ballarat at 8 pm to meet up with 4 other riders. Possibly not a good idea for me to be going but had put in too much planning and had been dreaming of the day. So......
Overnight stop at Packsaddle was a bit crazy. Howling winds really tested our tents. Great Mixed Grill which was washed down by some nice cold Tooheys Olds.
My only off for the trip happened just South of Milparinka. Came over a slight rise doing about 100 kph and hit a 50 metre stretch of loose stuff. Sent me tank slapping and after about 40 metres down I went. Pis weak BMW crash bar folds back onto the cylinder head and puts a crack in it. Never mind Chief Engineer (RAN retired) Dick came to the rescue fixing it with some Liquid Metal which held for the rest of the trip.
The rest of the guys patiently waited.
On the road out from Tibooburra to Camerons Corner crossing a clay pan.
The wild dog gate at Camerons Corner.
Camerons Corner General Store were you get the best roast beef and salad sandwiches.
Guzzi with a broken ankle at a Santo rig. Santos flew him home to Brisbane on the company jet and are trucking his bike back on a company truck. Good fellas those Santos boys.
Waiting for the rest of the guys while stopping the wild dogs from getting through the gate.
We set camp about 50 kms west of Camerons Corner. Great spot with a good fire and plenty of wood. Huge sky of stars that night just left us in awe.
Finishing the night with a port.
The Old Strezlecki Track heading for Innaminka.
One of the many Santos gas rigs we passed along the way.
Innaminka General Store. Bloody good hamburgers here.
Tim in Charlieville Hospital after breaking his leg and collar bone while trying to catch up to us.
Some of the guys at Will's Grave. Top spot to camp but we had to keep going. Got our first real taste of sand riding in to this site. Not great on a fully loaded pig.
These were great roads to ride.
OK were good for that.
Camped on the Walkers Crossing track and woke to a nice frost. Chappy was up early to light the fire.
Further on on Walkers Crossing
Met up with some guys from Adelaide, apparently we had camped about 10 kms apart.
Chappy on the TDM rode bloody well.
Sunset in the Birdsville Caravan Park.
Birdsvill Hotel and airport.
From the left are Rex, Marcus, Chappy, Dick, David, Phil and Ken.
Road trains are common up this way.
